James Suckling

2018 Spätburgunder Schupen GG - 93 Points

A rich, fleshy pinot noir, but there’s plenty of earthy character and polished tannins supporting the generous structure. Lively finish that pulls you back for more. Drink or hold.

2019 Riesling Wurmberg Erste Lage - 95 Points

Very flinty and chalky, this stunning dry riesling is simultaneously sleek and very concentrated with great lemon-lime freshness and a very long, super straight finish. Costs about half the price of a GG, but as good as any of them from this region. Drink or hold.

2018 Spätburgunder Forstberg GG

A game-changing pinot noir for this region that almost literally takes your breath away. Stunning, floral aromas and a slew of tannins that are fine-grained and married to great concentration of forest berries and bright acidity that really focuses the finish. Clearly, winemaker Christian Dautel learned at lot while at Comte Lafon in Burgundy and this is also a special (high-altitude) site. Better after 2021.

2019 Riesling Steingrüben GG

Slightly funky (from reduction) at first, but that blows off quickly to reveal a wonderful array of golden fruit aromas (mirabelles). At once ripe and creamy, but lively and expressive with plenty of slatey character ,this is quite imposing at the long finish. Ideal with substantial food, such as cassoulet or spicy stews. Drink or hold.
